Transport for the East Midlands (TfEM) and Midlands Connect have launched a new shared vision for the future of transport in the East Midlands.

The East Midlands has a strong track record in delivering housing and employment growth in the national interest and at rates consistently higher than any region outside of London and the wider south-east.

But with better transport connectivity, we could do so much more. The East Midlands remains heavily dependent on congested roads, has limited public transport and poor east-west connectivity.

Official Treasury statistics also show that the East Midlands has the lowest level of transport investment per head of any UK region or nation, just 65% of the UK average in 2021/2. This situation has been endured for more than 20 years under Governments of all colours.

Transport for the East Midlands (TfEM) and Midlands Connect have a shared vision for the future of the East Midlands. In addition to promoting the rollout of electric vehicle charging points and alternative fuels such as hydrogen, they are working together to promote eight key strategic investment priorities that will support growth and investment across the region.

  1. Midland Main Line Electrification
  2. Nottingham-Leicester-Coventry Rail Connectivity
  3. HS2 to the East Midlands & Leeds
  4. A46 Growth Corridor & Newark
  5. A50/A500 Growth Corridor
  6. A5 Growth Corridor
  7. Improving Safety & Reliability on the A1
  8. Improving Connectivity across the EMDevCo/EMFreeport areas

Delivery of these priorities will contribute to the Government’s ‘Net Zero’ and ‘Levelling Up’ agendas and help to address the historic underfunding of the East Midlands.
