James Brokenshire confirms his commitment to the Midlands Engine as he takes on the role of its new Ministerial Champion

On 3 July, The Secretary of State for Communities the Rt Hon James Brokenshire MP confirmed he is picking up the baton as new Ministerial Champion to drive forward the Government’s ambitious plans to fire up the Midlands as an Engine for growth in the UK.

A thriving Midlands region is essential to building an economy which works for everyone and the government is playing its part in supporting the Midlands Engine Partnership achieve our ambition of growing the Midlands economy by £54bn by 2030 to make the Midlands an even better place to live, work, study and do business. Landmark China Strategy to boost trade

A landmark strategy designed to boost trade and investment with China has been unveiled at a special celebration event. 

The blueprint aims to bolster relationships and open the door for more businesses in Leicester and Leicestershire, and bolster educational links and tourism.

Created by the City and County Councils, it was launched on 11 June at an event marking 30 years of twinning arrangements between Leicestershire and Sichuan. More

Handover of the gift of the Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre by the Duke of Westminster

On 21 June, Sir John Peace, Chairman of the Midlands Engine, welcomed the ceremony in which The Duke of Westminster handed over the gift to the Nation of the Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre (DNRC) at Stanford Hall near Loughborough.

The DNRC was received by the Prime Minister at a special event held in the presence of His Royal Highness, The Duke of Cambridge.

The DNRC is an investment in clinical rehabilitation for the Armed Forces with the potential for a complementary civilian (‘National’ facility) on the same site. It is a £300m programme to provide a bespoke and purpose-built successor to the existing Defence rehabilitation establishment at Headley Court in Surrey treating injured soldiers, sailors and airmen. Find out more

Watch the Worcestershire 5G Consortium video filmed at the industry leading 5G demonstration

Following an exclusive demonstration of 5G radio applications at Worcester Bosch and Yamazaki, members of the Worcestershire 5G Consortium were interviewed about the exciting potential of the testbed project for businesses and the economy.

The UK's first Life Sciences Opportunities Zone praised at Ministerial visit

The Rt Hon Lord Henley, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) endorsed the UK’s first Life Sciences Opportunities Zone during a visit to Charnwood Campus, Loughborough in June.

Lord Henley met with The Rt Hon Nicky Morgan MP for Loughborough, LLEP Board Member Dr Nik Kotecha CEO of Morningside Pharmaceuticals, and representatives from Charnwood Campus to celebrate the Life Sciences sector, which according to latest figures is valued at £150 million in gross value added (GVA) and employs 3,600 across 130 businesses in the Leicester and Leicestershire area. Inward Investment brings over 13,000 new jobs to the Midlands

The Midlands Engine attracted 243 inward investment projects which resulted in 13,138 new jobs being created for the region.

Figures from the Department for International Trade published 26 June show that the Midlands Engine has achieved strong results in 2017/18, beating national trends and performing particularly well in terms of new jobs. 


In total FY 17/18 has seen an increase over FY16/17 of 18 Midlands Engine FDI Projects and 4,772 New Jobs. The proportion of projects where DIT, its overseas posts, or local investment delivery organisations have been involved in securing the investment has also increased this year. Find out more

£70 million regional partnership showcased to Government Minister

Plans to support over 1,000 innovative businesses as part of a £70 million research-led regional collaboration have been showcased to a Government minister this week.

Seven hundred jobs are being created as a result of the New Keele Deal – which is seeing Keele University work with Staffordshire County Council, Stoke-on-Trent City Council, Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, the Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Local Enterprise Partnership and University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust to stimulate growth of the knowledge-based economy in the Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire region. Loughborough College welcomes CBI president

Loughborough College CEO John Doherty welcomed CBI President Paul Drechsler to an event celebrating the region and calling for action to help boost its success.

At the College-hosted audience with regional business leaders, students also had the opportunity to cook and serve the evening meal and to host their own art exhibition. More

New Chair and board members for Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP)

The Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP) is pleased to announce the appointment of Kevin Harris, Partner at RSM UK as the new LLEP Chair. 

The appointment was ratified at the board meeting in June and Kevin assumed responsibility as Chair  on 1 July 2018. Kevin succeeds Nick Pulley, Regional Director at Santander Corporate Bank, who served as Board Chair for the past four years. More

The LLEP  also announced the appointments of Chas Bishop, Karen Smart and Neil McGhee as new Board Members. Find out more here

Boost for Midlands Biotech firms in Boston

A delegation of 11 Midlands companies from the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sector travelled to the United States to meet with buyers at the BIO International Convention in Boston.

The delegation was supported by the Midlands Engine and the Department for International Trade. BIO Boston was held in June and is the largest biotechnology event in the world and, now in its 25th year, attracted buyers from more than 76 countries and welcomed 16,000 biotechnology and pharmaceutical leaders to network. New Appointments to Marches LEP Board

The Marches Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has strengthened its top-level team with four new appointments to its board.
 
The Marches LEP is pleased to announce that James Staniforth and Paul Kalinauckas have been appointed along with Councillor Jonathan Lester who joins with his new role as leader of Herefordshire Council. And, Andrew Manning Cox takes up his seat in connection with his post as new Chairman of the Marches LEP’s designated Enterprise Zone in Hereford, Skylon Park. More
