The Midlands is home to some of the world’s most successful companies, driving trade and exports for the UK for over a century.
As the world recovers from the pandemic, the pioneering spirit of innovation and industry that has characterised the Midlands’ approach to internationalisation will help put our region at the forefront of a new Global Britain.
By activating inward investment opportunities, we aim to expand our global footprint in support of levelling up. Increasing inward investment and exports will also help to close our productivity gap and grow economic prosperity. We will accelerate opportunities for international trade as we develop our global brand recognition and region-to-region relationships within high-growth markets, such as the USA, South East Asia, the Gulf and Africa. We will also work to underpin our essential regional trade relationship with Europe.
The Midlands contributes £90 billion to the national economy through its international activities and is in a strong position to achieve even more.
- The Midlands accounts for 20% share of England’s exports
- The Midlands Engine area exported just over £43 billion worth of goods in the year ending Q1 2021
- The largest Standard International Trade Classification (SITC) section for exports in the Midlands Engine area was machinery and transport which amounted to £28.2 billion – 65.1% of our region’s total
- The highest value of exports from the Midlands Engine area was to the European Union at £20.5 billion – accounting for 47.4% of the total
