Midlands Engine Green Growth Conversation

Midlands Engine Green Growth Conversation

The Midlands Engine Green Growth Conversation comes at a critical time. If a global pandemic wasn’t challenging enough, we find ourselves in the midst of a climate and biodiversity crisis that will change our world forever. The Midlands has an opportunity to play a leading role in achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, at the very heart of shaping a green future for our nation and the world.

The Midlands Engine Green Growth Conversation was launched in July 2020 in partnership with industry, the Energy Research Accelerator, National Trust and other leading regional voices, and facilitated by Browne Jacobson LLP.

In an initial roundtable, we connected leaders from industry, Government and academia to discuss how the region can drive a green, sustainable economic recovery post-COVID-19. From this discussion, the Building Back Stronger, Better and Greener report was produced. Then, in August 2020, the Midlands Engine hosted a meeting of senior figures from NGO partners in the environmental and conservation sector to discuss how to incorporate environmental protection and renewal into our green recovery.

The Conversation continued over subsequent months via one-to-one interviews, surveys, an additional roundtable event hosting more than 35 leaders from across the region’s energy sector and a virtual Environment Strategy workshop to share ambitions about how the region can lead the way in tackling the climate and biodiversity emergencies. Building on all this activity, in 2021 the Midlands Engine partnership has carried out additional targeted industry research and comprehensive mapping of Green Growth activity, challenges and opportunities across the Midlands.

All of these insights and intelligence are now supporting the development of a Midlands Engine Green Growth Action Plan which will be launched in the summer. Through this Action Plan, the Midlands Engine will enable our region to accelerate green investment, innovation and growth, playing a fundamental role in levelling up regional resilience and prosperity.
