The Midlands has significant sector strengths in energy – from energy generation through to a range of technologies, storage, transmission and innovative use of energy in industry, homes and transport.
However, these strengths need to be understood collectively in order to showcase the depth and breadth of energy expertise in our region.
Midlands Engine, in partnership with Browne Jacobson LLP and the Energy Research Accelerator, has initiated a conversation across the region to drive forward a partnership approach to evidencing, addressing and resourcing solutions to the diverse energy challenges of the Midlands which present a barrier to economic growth.
The Energy Conversation began in July 2020 with an initial roundtable connective energy sector leaders from industry, government and academia. From this discussion, the ‘Building back stronger, better and greener’ report was produced, which forms the basis of the vital Energy Conversation. This conversation continued over subsequent months through a host of interviews and surveys, summarised in the ‘Midlands Engine Energy Conversation’ report, providing further insight into the energy capacity, challenges and opportunities in the Midlands.
Then, in November 2020, a focussed roundtable event was held, hosting more than 35 leaders from across the region’s energy sector. This event presented insightful discussion concerning existing and upcoming solutions as well as quality debate around the challenges and opportunities for Green Growth in the Midlands. The Midlands Engine Energy Conversation: Roundtable Read-Out provides a summary of all the salient points arising from this roundtable discussion as well as some of the earlier 1-1s and interviews.

We are interested in:
- regional energy review and mapping
- where current research programmes are up to
- identifying what are the key challenges being faced across the sector
- how can we work together to meet the net zero challenge
- what investment is needed and by whom
- where opportunities exist to grow and increase efficiencies in our energy sector
- what opportunities are there to scale up existing solutions to a regional level
- the skills needed for the development of the sector in the future
Building on all the activity to-date, in the new year the Midlands Engine partnership will engage in more in-depth interventions based on the key themes outlined in the Roundtable report, including A. More targeted industry research to enhance our knowledge and evidence base, B. Comprehensive mapping of Green Growth activity, challenges and opportunities across the Midlands, and C. Focused thematic workshops to identify key strategic priorities that will deliver the desired impact and step change for the Midlands. This work will connect our findings from the Energy Conversation and integrate them with the Midlands Engine Environment Conservation, ultimately leading to the development of a Midlands Engine Green Growth Action Plan which will be launched in Spring 2021.
