The connectivity of the Midlands Engine will be central to its success. Midlands Connect will set out a credible long-term transport investment strategy for the Midlands. We will identify early investment to improve road and rail networks and explore how new technologies can increase capacity of existing transport networks.

Improving transport links to speed up journey times across the Midlands could potentially boost the regional economy by more than £1 billion per annum, create 300,000 additional jobs and save businesses nearly £500 million.

Our location at the heart of the UK means unparalleled opportunities for connections to existing and new markets. Our strategic road and rail networks such as the M6, the M1, the West Coast Mainline, the East Coast Mainline and the Midlands Mainline are all of national importance.

Birmingham Airport handles more than 10 million passengers and East Midlands Airport is the second largest freight airport in the country. HS2 will place the Midlands at the centre of a new national high-speed rail network that will provide much needed rail capacity better connections and faster journeys between Britain’s major cities.
