The Midlands Engine will drive up business innovation and improve productivity and competitiveness. Our universities and businesses will work together to bring forward innovations that support our key sectors and their supply chains.
As one of the five themes identified in our prospectus the Midlands Engine has formed the Midlands Engine Innovation Group. This group will work to bring forwards initiatives that address gaps in national capability, drive business retention and inward investment, safeguard and increase employment and equip UK businesses to lead globally in response to the rapidly evolving demands of customers.
Through one of the first Science and Innovation Audits we have identified four market driven priorities and three cross-cutting enabling competencies that we believe build on the region’s strengths:
Market driven priorities
- Next Generation Transport
- Medical Technologies and Pharmaceuticals
- Future Food Processing
- Energy and Low Carbon
- Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering
- Digital Technologies and Data
- Systems Integration
The Midlands Engine Innovation Group will initially focus on creating projects that take forwards the four market driven priorities with the target of securing government investment for the region that will address the challenge of increasing productivity.
To deliver these initiatives the Midlands Engine Innovation Group will need to draw on the rich innovation ecosystem that resides in the region. We are home to 21 universities and 1000’s of businesses, including organisations such as Arup, Atkins, Boots, Bombardier, GKN Land Systems, IBM, Intelligent Energy, Jaguar Land Rover, JCB, 3M, Mondelez International, National Grid, PepsiCo, Qinetiq, Ricardo, Rolls Royce, Siemens, Thales and Unileaver and their supply chains. We have unique innovation assets such as Manufacturing Technology Centre and the Warwick Manufacturing Group in Coventry, MIRA, the National Rail Research Centre, and the National Automotive Innovation Centre, the Energy Systems Catapult, the High Value Manufacturing Catapult and British Geological Survey.
We are generating a rich supply of spin-out companies and our students are some of the most enterprising in the country.
