In 2020/21, over 193,000 patients from across the Midlands signed up to be a part of clinical trials in everything from diabetes, gastrointestinal and renal disorder to paediatric health – helping to broaden our understanding of the human body.

Our region’s world-leading expertise in clinical trials with the power to change lives and improve outcomes for patients is now showcased in a new publication.

In the Midlands, a stable, ethnically diverse population of around 11 million people is combined with outstanding health infrastructure and world-leading clinical investigators making our region the ideal testbed for advances in human health.

Expertise in diverse fields, including designing complex and adaptive trials, usability and testing, innovative engagement of patients and industry, and high-quality trial delivery, have enabled our region to successfully attracted over £48 million of investment in 2020 for 75 projects funded by the National Institute of Health Research.

The Midlands represents Europe’s second-largest clinical trials cluster with 41 Clinical Commissioning Groups, 52 NHS Trusts and 17 Acute Trusts, including four of the largest Trusts in the UK – in Birmingham, Coventry and Warwickshire, Leicester and Nottingham.
