The first phase of the transformation of a former brickworks site into a business and commercial hub has been completed, producing 46,000 sq ft of industrial and retail space at Vesuvius in north Nottinghamshire.

It is hoped that the £16.5 million Vesuvius project in Worksop will eventually create almost 1000 new jobs and contribute £23 million per year to the area’s economy.

Wider local benefits include apprenticeships, training and skills development and inward investment opportunities.

In 2019, supported by £4.48 million from D2N2 LEP, a £5.5million scheme began to create a new roundabout and access road opening up the site and making it easily accessible to the A60, A57, Worksop and the surrounding area.

As part of this work, the land was remediated to pave the way for redevelopment.

The new phase comprises three flexible food and beverage units and 16 light industrial units with subsequent phases offering larger employment units.

With a Burger King restaurant, ASDA superstore and petrol filling station already on site, a further nine completed units are now available to let.

Earlier this year, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service agreed for the site to become home to a new £3.4 million fire station and practice tower.

More recently, planning permission was granted to Travis Perkins for a new builders merchants facility.

D2N2 LEP Interim CEO, Will Morlidge said:

The Vesuvius site represents an exciting landmark development for Worksop and the wider area, and we’re very proud to have supported it.

The success of this phase of the development demonstrates a resurgent appetite for investment across north Nottinghamshire, supporting ambitions to rebuild and grow our economy.

Cllr Jo White, Cabinet Member for Regeneration at Bassetlaw District Council, said:

Regenerating the Vesuvius site has been one of the Council’s big priorities over the last ten years and more, so the delivery of this site is extremely welcome news.

We have been working in partnership with CEG, D2N2 and other stakeholders and the site is achieving its promise of more jobs for local people and even more investment for Worksop and the wider North Notts area.

The added bonus will be the improved emergency provision with a new Fire Station for Worksop.
