The Black Country has become the UK’s eighth UNESCO Geopark, with its new status recognising it as an area of outstanding geological heritage. It received the recognition due to its cultural heritage and the partnerships committed to conserving, managing and promoting it, with the role the region played in the Industrial Revolution at the heart of its bid.
More than 40 Geosites have been selected within the Geopark, including Dudley and Wolverhampton Museums, Wren’s Nest National Nature Reserve, Sandwell Valley, Red House Glass Cone, Bantock Park and Walsall Arboretum.
