Having been home to such medical advances as the MRI machine and Ibuprofen, the Midlands has always been a centre of excellence for Medical Technologies and today our region is home to the UK’s largest cluster of MedTech businesses.

Midlands Engine Health: Focus on MedTech shines a light on a regional sector that contributes £1.6 billion GVA each year to the UK economy. The Midlands MedTech sector boasts a workforce of 23,600 and almost 1,000 MedTech businesses, the majority of which are over ten years old.

These businesses and organisations include the Centre of Membrane Proteins and Receptors, which is a world-leading centre for the study of membrane receptors using innovative microscopy and computational methods. Its work also seeks to identify new approaches for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease and cancer angiogenesis.

Another organisation performing vital work in our region is the Centre for Healthcare Equipment & Technology Adoption, which seeks to improve healthcare for patients, primarily in the NHS, through the deployment of innovative medical-device technologies.

Our region’s health and life sciences sector is home to the UK’s largest cluster of MedTech businesses, but it is also supported by a wide range of world-leading academic and clinical facilities, research and expertise. This is all in addition to two Life Science Opportunity zones and the recently announced Freeports which will unlock the opportunity for our region to do more innovation, manufacturing and international trade.

As a result, our region is ideally placed to lead the development of new MedTech products and services from bench to bedside, create start-ups, drive regional growth and capture the growing national and global MedTech market.
