The Midlands has an economy of £222 billion each year and is home to over 11.5 million people.
“As a Midlands resident and MP, I know the importance of the region to the country’s economy – the heartland of our manufacturing sector
The area has played a strong role in the recovery of the UK economy – over the last year, private sector employment in the Midlands grew more than three times faster than London and the South East.
However there is more to do. I am very pleased that local leaders – private, public and educational – have accepted central government’s challenge to boost the economy of the region. I look forward to working with them to achieve this ambition.
The Midlands Engine has a vision for an economy focused on productivity and driven by getting the most out of the Midlands’ workforce, research and transport.
The Midlands is a great place to do business, to learn, to live and to relax and I am delighted to give my support, as Ministerial Champion, to the Midlands Engine.”
